Hempseeds contain more protein than any natural source. The oil from cold-pressed hemp seeds is nature's best source of essential fatty acids including Omega-3, -6 and -9 oils, and hemp seeds are the only natural source where Omega-3 and -6 occur in the ideal 3:1 ratio that the human body needs. Hempseeds are also very high in energy and fiber and contain many trace elements. And of course, hemp is nature-friendly, needing no pesticides or fertilisers to grow. Hemp is so healthy the Australia and New Zealand governments banned hemp foods for human consumption because they said allowing people to eat healthy hemp foods might make them start smoking pot (ridiculous, huh?).
What is allowed: We're allowed to sell hemp seed oil (but cannot ship this to Australia). While other hemp foods are unavailable here, KiwiCanna food-grade Hemp Meal and Hemp Protein Flour are available as food-grade animal feeds. Birds sing for hemp seed, it makes a great fish food or burley, horses get lush shiney hair and hooves, and chickens love it too.
Hemp foods legal again soon?
Health officials want hemp seed foods re-legalised here. We completely agree - allowing hemp foods would kickstart the hemp industry, make hemp farming viable, and be wonderful for the health of consumers. You can make a submission here supporting hemp foods by 25 August 2016, and if you're keen email your MP with your views.
